i also hate how the most popular substack articles pushed to the top of everyone’s algorithms are sf-based or ny-based girly thinkpieces on consumerism/relationships, nothing wrong w those and i even enjoy some, but there’s such a wider range of writing and stories that people create that’s totally missed by the algorithm, which is a shame.

finding writers outside this niche is so hard!! and it creates such a pressure to emulate their aesthetic and topics even if it's so far from why you came here bc that's where success is (also, respectfully, you can tell many people are just emulating it based on the shallowness of their thinkpieces - im sure their talents and potential is hidden in another topic)

yess!! it's so obvious when people are copying the writers who are genuinely good at philosophical thinkpieces, rather than exploring their actual interests/expertise. all i have is disdain for the algorithm's top posts. i try to stay away from the slop as much as possible and only read stuff from people i organically subscribed to (discovered on other platforms like youtube or twitter)

completely agree. substack is just like every other social media now, hope a new platform pops up that is focused on good writing instead of views.
