growing up with asian immigrant parents, this line hit hard: "i never understood what it felt like to celebrate a holiday and what it felt like to have parents who are festive. the most they’ve done for my birthday was remember, and for a holiday, acknowledge that it existed."
Regarding how to get better at the podcasts, you’ll get better with practice so try to get as many real reps/episodes as fast as possible. You won’t get that much better by watching other interviewers so it’s better to 1) talk to people you find interesting and people you’re genuinely curious about because if you’re excited, 2) the conversation will just flow and you’ll forget that you’re recording.
The last point is critical because it’s so easy to have a casual conversation and have a good time without cameras but once you add the framing of recording, cameras, and interviews, no matter who it is, people will feel it and start acting differently.
From what I’ve realized from doing The UIUC Talkshow is that best interviews/conversations is when we’re successful at making the guests forget that we’re even doing an interview. If you and the guests can forget that, that’s when you know you’re having an enjoyable and fun conversation!

so real 😔 we ought to reclaim growing up as not a cynical loss of innocence but rather as a rediscovery and integration of the inner child
